This week, Charli XCX took over Apple Music’s Beats 1 radio to chat with LGBTQ pop icon Kim Petras. The two artists discussed Petras’ upcoming projects and collabing with electronic artist Sophie.
The interview opened with Charli questioning what the singer had in store for 2019. When asked about a possible full-length album, Petras told Charli that she’s definitely working toward completing a project this year.
“I’m hoping to get a full-length out in the summer,” Petras said. “I always wanna drop a bunch of singles first and see how it goes and see if people like the stuff.”
Charli later asked about Petras’ experience working with Sophie on her latest single, “1, 2, 3 Dayz Up.” Petras explained that she had met Sophie during her first artist show and had always admired her work. After running into each other at a couple of parties, Petras eventually had her pop into the studio to collab on the track.
Petras further elaborated that “1, 2, 3 Dayz Up” was inspired by a German song Petras used to play a lot when she was “drunk.” The song was about staying up for three days straight and Petras had always dreamed of doing her own pop version of the concept.
“It’s like the perfect theme for me,” Petras said. “I have tedious days a lot where I have a vague concept what I wanna get, but I’m just not nailing it. This one was super fast. We did the first four demos right away, like ‘Let’s keep going, let’s keep going, let’s keep going.’”
Charli wrapped up her FaceTime session with Petras by congratulating the artist on her accomplishments, as well as thanking her for her contribution to their collab “Unlock It.” The twosome exclaimed how much they “stan” each other, and Petras closed her call by introducing her single “1, 2, 3 Dayz Up,” for the radio.
