Singer and Glee star Kevin McHale recently visited the Billboard office to chat about his debut EP Boy, getting in a shower with Johnny Sibilly for his latest music video, his coming-out experience and what pride means to him.
Speaking of his forthcoming EP Boy, which is out Friday, McHale tells Billboard that he never intentionally set out to release the collection of songs during Pride Month, but that he does ultimately find it very fitting. “The stories, the songs are about my relationship with past boyfriends, current boyfriend, that sort of thing,” he says.
He then discusses working with his “James Dean” music video co-star Johnny Sibilly, noting that it was “so sweet” of him to agree to “get in a shower with a stranger.”
McHale reveals that he recently discovered that Sibilly was a huge Glee fan and he even hosted weekly viewing parties to watch the show. “And he was also on Pose, which was in the Ryan Murphy family, and we were Twitter friends. It was very 2019,” he adds. “I asked him if he would do it, and he said yes immediately, which was great and I think it was perfect.”
In the interview, McHale also reflects on his coming-out experience, confessing that the fan reaction to the news was both “hilarious” and “really sweet and moving.”
“People were very supportive,” he says. “And then the other comments were just hilarious, they were like, ‘Yass, welcome!’ I was like, ‘Yeah, I’ve been here, you just didn’t know.’”
As for what pride means to him, the singer and actor says that it means knowing the history of what people had to go through to fight for the privileges they continue to fight for today and being yourself, “whatever that looks like, however you wanna do it.”
