For Gay Pride Month, Billboard asked numerous pop culture luminaries to write “love letters” to the LGBTQ community. Below, dance music artist Kandy shares his. Read more Pride Month love letters here.
The LGBTQ+ community has been such a huge inspiration for me and one of the main reasons I started creating music in the first place. Growing up, I always knew I was gay, but like many others, I was too afraid to accept it. I sought out all different types of creative outlets as a way to block out the thought of accepting it.
Coming up in the NYC rave and club scene, I found others who were just like me. Others who were searching for a place to feel loved, accepted, and a place we could be ourselves. Now, eight years later, coming out publicly and living as a visible gay man in the music industry, I strive to be the voice I was once searching for.
Through sharing my coming out story, I’ve received countless amounts of thank-you letters, words of encouragement and an unconditional amount of love. So I thank the LGBTQ+ community for being so strong, fearless, unique, persistent, and continuing to spread visibility for those who aren’t as fortunate. You’ve stood up to the world time and time again. You continue to break down the wall of social norms. I am so thankful for the men, women, and especially trans POC who came before me that fought for us to be able to live as openly and as free as we are able to do now.
Together, our greatest strength is love, and just like music, it has no boundaries.
