For Gay Pride Month, Billboard asked numerous pop culture luminaries to write ‘love letters’ to the LGBTQ community. Below, trans activist Janet Mock — host of the podcast Never Before and author of Surpassing Certainty — shares hers. Read more Pride Month love letters here.
Pride Month is always a reminder for me to reflect on our collective struggle toward freedom which stretches back to that night in 1969 when a bunch of queens, street youth, trans and queer folk resisted against policing and a culture of containment. I am reminded that as we celebrate Pride, we cannot forget the thousands who have sacrificed their bodies and their lives for us, and I uplift those of you are still with us, who are struggling, striving and slaying in the shadows. I celebrate you, admire you, appreciate you and am committed to fighting daily to ensure you are able to live, love and dream out loud. Thank you for the affirmation you have given me, for teaching me and challenging me, for pushing me and applauding me, and for always keeping it all the way real. You’re my heroes!
