Into’s YouTube series Old Lesbians is a sweet, cross-generational exchange where three women above the age of 65 get a crash course in queer women-centric pop culture circa 2018. The latest entry in the series features a surprise guest appearance from none other than #20gayteen’s patron saint, Hayley Kiyoko.
The women — Belita, Phyllis and Sabel — already professed their love for the “What I Need” singer earlier in the series, praising her music videos for portraying LGBTQ women in an authentic light.
In the new clip, the women give Kiyoko “lady advice” as they talk about Kiyoko’s VMA win, her parents accepting her identity, and the courage that comes with telling queer-specific narratives in her music videos. “Now when they see these videos and these articles and they see that people are affected by it, they’re like, ‘Wow, this is really cool,” says Kiyoko about her parents.
“The average singer does not save people’s lives,” Sabel replies. “You’re an advocate for, you know, battered women and young people and I think it’s wonderful. You’re doing so much more with your life beyond the music.”
But the best part? The women get a little flirty with Kiyoko. The pop queen is game, dropping a few smooth one-liners for the head-over-heels gals. “I’m gonna put it out there; you’re my type,” Kiyoko tells Belita.
