Former One Direction member and rock star Harry Styles has garnered a fervent queer fan base. Fans praise Styles for making his concerts safe places where people can be themselves, and they have even determined that his still-unreleased live song “Medicine” is a bisexual anthem.
A few of his fans want to let everyone in the audience feel the LGBTQ love at his two sold-out shows at New York City’s Madison Square Garden Thursday (June 21) and Friday (June 22). A Twitter account called the “Harry Styles MSG Rainbow Project” (@msg_rainbow) tweeted out a seating chart of Madison Square Garden, where each section corresponded to a different color on the rainbow LGBTQ Pride flag.
The account asked fans to bring their own colored strips of paper to the performance, although they will be passing out a limited amount of paper. On Thursday night, when Styles begins singing his song “Sweet Creature,” the account asks that they hold their corresponding colored paper up to the flashlights of their phones in order to create a rainbow effect throughout the concert venue. On Friday night, they plan to do this for the song “If I Could Fly.”
This is not the first time fans have done this at a Harry Styles concert; back in April, fans planned the same feat during the singer’s show at London’s O2 Arena and pulled it off — during his performance of “Sweet Creature,” the audience transformed into an illuminated rainbow flag throughout the song.

In an interview with Teen Vogue, Luna Riedel, one of the organizers of the “Rainbow London Project,” said that they chose that particular song for the tribute for a specific reason. “We chose the song ‘Sweet Creature’ [because in there, Harry] sings about that one person that makes you feel like home and for us, it’s him,” she said.
