Just about everyone has been an angsty teenager at one point or another — slamming doors, blasting music, and don’t forget yelling at your parents. But with their newest single, “scream pop” duo Grlwood want to show you how angry young people can get.
On Friday (June 28), Grlwood released “I Hate My Mom,” a scathing, blurry punk rock jam about hating your life as a teenager. Starting with a list of commands that they’re given, bandmates Karen Ledford and Rej Forester spell out exactly why they’re so angry, before declaring: “I fucking hate my mom!”
In an interview with Billboard, the girls explained that while the song started out as a sarcastic commentary about teenage angst, it quickly evolved into a raging track actually pointing out “all the trivial shit you have to go through as a young person…being a teenager (especially a queer one) is like one big fat existential crisis on repeat.”
The release comes after Grlwood’s debut last year with Daddy, a sarcastic concept album focusing on a cast of problematic characters. The duo says most fans understood the ironic songwriting, but some simply took their messaging at face value. “ [Daddy lead single] ‘Bisexual’ is a good example because some people hear it and don’t realize it’s largely sarcastic,” they said. “That’s totally okay, though, because we want to create dialogue about LGBTQ topics. We want that fire ignited in people.”
The new single comes ahead of their new “Satanic concept album,” I Sold My Soul to the Devil When I Was 12, which is due out August 2.
