There are few LGBTQ artists who are quite as beloved and influential as R&B superstar Frank Ocean. The singer first openly addressed his sexuality back in 2012 around the release of his hit album Channel Orange, when he wrote a letter posted to his Tumblr page where he addressed his first-ever relationship, which was with a man.
Now, the singer has shared a photo of himself posing next to a wall-sized photograph of the legendary drag queen and John Waters’ favorite actress Divine. On his Tumblr page, Ocean posted the photo with the simple caption “me&mom.”
Ocean rarely posts on his Tumblr page and usually reserves posting for releasing or announcing songs, sharing cryptic lyrics or messages, or very occasionally his sporadic thoughts. “I love the way Michelle Wolf thinks,” he wrote, simply, after the comedian came under fire in March for her performance at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner; the post satirized Kanye West’s similar tweet about far-right commentator Candace Owens.
This isn’t the first time Ocean has referenced a drag legend to his fans. On an interlude song titled “Ambience 001: A Certain Way” from his visual album Endless, the singer samples Crystal LaBeija, one of the most iconic names in the 1980s New York City ball scene. The founder of the House of LaBeija can be heard on the track saying, “Because you’re beautiful and you’re young, you deserve to have the best in life” — a direct clip from the 1968 documentary The Queen.
