Sir Elton John is feeling a more than a little reflective these days. The icon has spent the last few months beginning the first leg of his “Farewell Yellow Brick Road” tour, which he says will be his very last, while also anticipating to see his story translated to the big screen in the upcoming biopic Rocketman, starring Taron Egerton.
Now, John is taking another look back at his career in the new Christmas advertisement campaign for London-based department store chain John Lewis & Partners. The annually-anticipated commercial starts with John sitting at a piano in his home, tinkling a few keys before launching into the opening strains of “Your Song.”
The commercial travels backwards through the icon’s career, from his insanely energetic and wildly-costumed stadium shows to his origins as a guy playing at a piano in a pub. As the commercial continues back through his childhood, showing him playing piano all the way, it arrives on Christmas Day, where a young Elton unwraps a piano from his grandmother.
In a statement, the icon thanked John Lewis for asking him to be a part of their now-famous Christmas advertisement. “It’s been a lovely opportunity for me to reflect on my life in music and the incredible journey I have been on, and how first playing my Grandmother’s piano marks the moment when music came into my life,” he said. “The ad is absolutely fantastic and I’ve truly loved every minute of being a part of it.”
