In support of the highly-anticipated conversion therapy drama Boy Erased, the film’s stars Lucas Hedges, Nicole Kidman, and Troye Sivan made an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Monday (Oct. 29). Sivan performed “Revelation” to close out the episode, singing the moving ballad on television live for the first time. Complete with a live string quartet, the pop star took his contribution to the Boy Erased soundtrack to new emotional heights.
His Boy Erased co-star Lucas Hedges spoke earlier in the show about understanding his own sexuality in terms that are not so black and white, and how he discovered it through an especially helpful health teacher. DeGeneres told the leading man, “You made a statement that is really important for young people to hear because I think it’s confusing for people.”
“I went to a progressive, liberal arts school for my whole life and in sixth grade I had a health teacher who presented the idea of sexuality existing on a spectrum, that it’s not really that you exist 100% one thing and 100% the other,” Hedges explained. “I always identified myself as existing within that spectrum. I see it as something that’s more fluid and it’s not as black and white.”
But the real highlight of the segment was the tag-team round of Stuff Your Granny Panties — the classic game where the show’s guests are stuck in a pair of oversized granny panties and are forced to stuff as many balls as they can inside the panties. This round was Americans vs. Australians — Kidman and Sivan going head-to-head against Hedges and DeGeneres. No spoilers as to who the victors were, but if Kidman has anything to say about it, Ellen is “crazy competitive and crazy strong.”
