New Jersey singer-songwriter Donna Missal’s star has risen thanks to her smoky, swoon-worthy voice, plus some choice collaborations with Macklemore and Rudimental. But her heightening profile, which reached a fever pitch with the release of her debut album This Time earlier this month, comes with some unfortunate baggage.
The “Jupiter” performer took to Instagram to dispel any rumors that she is pretending to be queer, posting a scantily clad selfie in boxer briefs in the process.
On the post, she airs out her grievances about people labeling her sexuality based solely on her fashion sense and her romantic interests. “my non-binary style and fluid preference has no intention of diminishing gay culture but rather embracing and celebrating it,” she captions the post. “sis i’m not playing dress up and being with a man doesn’t make me less bi.”
She drives the point home with a simple-but-effective statement: “read: it’s not a phase :)”
Missal is touring with U.K. musician Bishop Briggs for three dates in October.
