UPDATE: After this story was published, deadmau5 returned to Reddit to apologize for using a homophobic slur on Twitch. “I needed a little cool down there for a few and seriously reflect on all this,” he wrote. “I know what I said was wrong, and my hastily composed non-apology was an insult to injury. I realize that trying to somewhat dismiss it as ‘gamer culture’ was even worse. I don’t know why I did that. But I do know it was stupid and insensitive and I feel even more ashamed. This was my worst moment.” He later added, “Apologies once again to everyone I’ve disappointed. I would love nothing more than to finally be at peace with myself and be the best human being I can be, trust me. Being ‘mr. I don’t give a fuck’ is not someone I ever aspired to be.” Read his full apology on Reddit.
Deadmau5 is getting squashed for an ill-advised social media rant that’s been labeled as “homophobic” and saw him tossed from Twitch.
The Canadian EDM producer, real name Joel Zimmermann, reportedly threw a tantrum after his character died in the online game PlayerUnknown’s Battleground. Mau5 took his grievances out on Twitch, initially with a post where he referred to his opponent as a “f*cking c*ck-sucking stream sniper f*g,” Queerty reports. Mau5’s outburst was enough to get him suspended by the streaming platform for apparently violating its anti-hate speech policies.
It didn’t stop there. NME reports that the often-helmeted dance music star took out his fury at Reddit with another rant, only this time he directed his anger at Twitch, which he castigated for its “double standard when it comes to censoring and suspending me for harmless shit.” Mau5 also vowed to cut ties with the company, having “had some fun partnerships here and there.”
Deadmau5 has since deleted his Reddit comments, though not before readers took screen grabs. Journalist Rod Breslau captured one, which can be seen below.

It’s not the first time Deadmau5 has been accused of dropping “homophobic” jibes online. Mau5 last year got involved in an online spat which was said to take a “homophobic” and “transphobic” turn. He later apologized for his comments, which were sparked by queries over the massive mouse helmet he wears on stage.
When he’s not gaming or beefing, Mau5 has been hard at work cutting the score for the Neftlix action feature Polar, which arrived earlier last month, and the third installment in his mau5ville series, which released early February.
