Last December, Australia granted same-sex couples the right to marry and among the couples celebrating were Tim Nelson and Sam “Bolan” Netterfield, the singer-songwriter and keyboardist, respectively, of alt-pop sweethearts Cub Sport. The couple are childhood best friends turned bandmates and the band’s latest single, “Crush” was inspired by the night the two admitted their love for each other.
“‘Crush’ is about the night that completely changed the course of our lives and the enormous wave of emotions it brought on; happiness, relief, an instant regret for not saying something sooner and guilt that my struggles to embrace my true self had left Bolan hanging in limbo,” explained Nelson. “It was a conversation we’d avoided having for our eight years as we both struggled to come to terms with our true identities.”
The video, directed by Brittney Scott, was filmed in Joshua Tree and stars the band’s lovebirds. “The shot where we’re walking towards each other along the freeway feels like an apt metaphor for finding our way to each other over time,” Nelson said. “The editing really represents the two-steps-forward, one-step-back nature of our journey towards self-acceptance and each other.”
“We finished the final shot just before sunset, then cruised out of Joshua Tree under the bright, pink-purple sky with Frank Ocean’s ‘Pyramids’ blasting,” he added. “It was truly magical.”
