In the week since releasing her new song, “Girls,” Rita Ora has faced backlash from fans and multiple queer artists who feel that the lyrics trivialize the nature of sexuality. Ora has since taken to Twitter and apologize for her song, saying, “I would never intentionally cause harm to other LGBTQ+ people or anyone.”

Now, actress and model Cara Delevingne has entered the ongoing debate, saying that the criticisms against Ora’s song aren’t accounting for her own truth. “I don’t think it’s right to say her experience and her words are wrong,” she told Paper magazine. “If she hadn’t ever felt that way and it wasn’t true then that would be weird. She’s being proud of something and saying it.”
Delevingne also mentioned that she was a fan of all the artists involved, including Ora, Cardi B, Charli XCX and Bebe Rexha. “I mean, I love all of those artists, I think it’s a really great song,” she said. “I love Rita. I think she’s a wonderful artist and I always support her in what she does.”
The Paper Towns actress added that Ora “didn’t need to apologize,” and that she should continue performing the song. “She did nothing wrong,” she said. “She should be able to come forth and say, ‘This is the way I did this and I’m going to keep on singing this song because it’s a great song.’ It came from the right intention and that’s what’s most important.”
Delevingne, who has identified as both bisexual and sexually fluid throughout her career, said that at the end of the day, there are always going to be some people who are unhappy with the way someone represents an underrepresented community. “No one’s ever going to fully back one thing that happens,” she said. “There’s always going to be a conversation. It’s why you make music, or movies, so people can talk about it. That’s the point.”
