Last night, the 29th annual GLAAD Media Awards at the Beverly Hilton was a star-studded affair. Celebs like Halle Berry, Ryan Murphy, Jim Parsons and Wanda Sykes rubbed elbows, but there was one star that stole the show: Britney Spears.
The pop icon was honored with the Vanguard Award, presented to media professionals who have made a significant difference in promoting equality and acceptance of LGBTQ people. Before Spears took the stage herself, Ricky Martin — who presented the award the singer — praised her efforts for the community.
“She could be one of those stars with a huge LGBTQ following who does nothing and says nothing,” Ricky Martin said. “Instead, she uses her platform to remind audiences around the globe that intolerance is unacceptable.”
Spears heartfelt speech further proved Martin’s point, emphasizing the importance of acceptance and staying true to yourself.
“I feel like our society has always put such an emphasis on what’s ‘normal’ and to be different is unusual or seen as strange. But to be accepted unconditionally and to be able to express yourself as an individual through art is such a blessing.” She added that both being a mother and having such a loving fan base has shown her what it means to love unconditionally.
