Audiences have gotten to know Blimes as the year has gone on, with the release of her hip-hop masterpiece Castles and the success of her rap single “Come Correct.” But with her latest track, Blimes wants those same audiences to see a different side of her.
On Friday (Dec. 13), Blimes released her latest single “Under My Skin,” a vast departure from her previous work. Gone are the rapid-paced raps and bossed-up lyrics, now replaced by some tender R&B melodies, a slick hand-clapping beat, and Blimes crooning about a relationship on the rocks that she just can’t seem to let go of. “Under my sheets/ Yeah, you’re under my skin,” she sings.
The video takes a similarly moody route. Set in an overcast seaside town, the clip follows Blimes and her partner (played by her actual former girlfriend Merlin The Girl) as they wander around the shore and the town, at first having a fun time together. But as time goes on, the spell breaks: their day devolves into a bitter argument and a makeup, all before we see Blimes sprinting for the girl’s house, repeating the cycle once again.
