With the 2020 presidential election less than one month away, Billy Porter and Stephen Stills are doubling down on their efforts to tell their fans: “Get out and vote.”
On Tuesday (Oct. 6), Porter and Stills released a new version of Buffalo Springfield’s “For What It’s Worth” to help raise money for increasing election participation. A remix of Porter’s cover of the song he released in April, the new “Something Happening Here Remix” features Stills on the guitar, as Porter’s powerhouse vocals continue to drive home the song’s prescient lyrics.

All proceeds from the new remix will be donated to Michelle Obama’s non-profit organization, When We All Vote. Launched in 2018 by Obama, alongside stars like Lin-Manuel Miranda, Janelle Monáe, Tom Hanks and more, the organization aims to “increase participation in every election and close the race and age voting gap by changing the culture around voting, harnessing grassroots energy, and through strategic partnerships to reach every American.”
In a statement released with the new remix, Stills said that his mission in making music has always been to inspire change, and that he hopes “For What It’s Worth” can continue its legacy of doing just that.”[Music] has historically brought people together for a common purpose and means for positive national evolution and is proof positive of its continuing effectiveness as we see new artists reinforce the message,” he said. “My greatest hope is to instill change in one another in a way that can and will make a difference now.”
Porter echoed Stills’ sentiment, adding that with the stakes being as high as they are in the November election, he hopes that their music rallies people to go to the ballot box. “This song means so much to me. I am first generation post-civil rights, and this song speaks truth power as much today as it did when it first came out,” he said. “As we close in on this fever-pitch of an election, I hope that our version of ‘For What It’s Worth’ will raise people up and inspire them to take action, use their voice, and vote, vote, vote.”
