Back in October, bounce pioneer Big Freedia got to share a track and a stage with pop superstar Kesha on “Raising Hell.” Now, the Queen Diva is returning the favor with her latest single.
On Thursday (Feb. 20), Freedia released her new song “Chasing Rainbows” featuring Kesha, an uplifting dance-pop gem where the star reaffirms her own identity, while shutting down those who would try and supress her. Throughout the verses, Freedia lists off the various ways in which she’s been put down throughout her life, be it by schoolyard bullies, religious figures or even record labels, before passing the mic to Kesha to make clear that they won’t be put down any longer. “You know me, bein’ free/’ Won’t be silent,” Kesha sings. “I pray for my enemies.”
To accompany the track, Freedia also debuted the song’s vibrant video, which sees the Queen of Bounce on a technicolor mission to empower those who look up to her. As Freedia concocts a potion made purely out of a jar of love, she gets lifted into the sky by a rainbow wave, where she meets up with Kesha, and begins spreading her message. “They don’t wanna chase this rainbow,” the pair sing.
In a statement released with the track, Freedia said she wanted to give her fans a roadmap to go after what they believe in. “To me, ‘Chasing Rainbows’ is a love anthem,” she said. “It’s about how love will always conquer fear and hate. I’ve always been about celebrating who you are— no matter what anyone tries to tell you—and this song is meant to inspire people to chase their dreams, no matter what obstacles they face.”
