America’s first-reigning queen of RuPaul’s Drag Race, BeBe Zahara Benet, has her sights set beyond the All Stars 3 crown.
Today, Benet released a new Kickstarter campaign to fund her new documentary film, BEING BEBE: the BeBe Zahara Benet Documentary. The campaign is aiming to raise $33,000 in 33 days in order to finish the film’s post-production.
The film follows Benet (who’s birth name is Marshall Kudi Ngwa) over the span of her career. Starting in Minneapolis, where the performer from Cameroon, West Africa, began her career as a drag queen, fans get to see Benet’s journey to becoming a sensation in the drag community.
In an exclusive statement to Billboard, Benet said that the current state of political affairs makes this film even more necessary. “As someone who happens to be an immigrant and a drag entertainer, this project tells a unique story I believe will inspire people in today’s political climate,” she said. “It started as a way to share my experiences as an outsider and blossomed into an opportunity to document what happens when culture, race, gender identity/performance and sexual orientation collide.”
The campaign will be hosting a Kickstarter Live event on Tuesday, March 6 at 9:00 p.m. ET, where Benet will answer submitted questions and interact with her fans.
