On Monday (June 15), the Supreme Court issued the landmark ruling officially protecting LGBTQ people from workplace discrimination, and artists are taking to social media to celebrate the surprise victory.
“YES!! Thank you to the Supreme Court Justices who voted in favor and all the advocates who have fought so hard for this! We still have a long way to go to reach equality, but this is a beautiful step forward,” Taylor Swift tweeted.
Tegan and Sara shared The New York Times‘ headline about the case’s verdict while shouting out the late Aimee Stephens — the transgender plaintiff who sadly passed away in May while awaiting the decision — with a hashtag. “It took 56 years but today the Supreme Court ruled that Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 protects LGBTQ+ workers from workplace discrimination,” the sister act wrote on Facebook. “A terrific and unexpected victory. Some people have spent their entire lives fighting for this. Some died waiting to hear the ruling. There are so many fights ahead but today we celebrate.”
Sara Bareilles retweeted the news with nearly a dozen clapping emojis to illustrate her excitement, while RuPaul’s Drag Race alum Peppermint broke down the impact of the ruling in layman’s terms. “What the decision means… that lgbtqi persons are a PROTECTED class. And job discrimination based on this is illegal,” she wrote. “That is a brilliant thing ( this is how it WAS. but THEY were trying to delete it) the court ( America) said NOPE!”
