When Paul Rudd appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to perform a shot-for-shot remake of Dead or Alive’s iconic “You Spin Me Round” music alongside with the host, fans applauded what they saw as a fun tribute to the ‘80s hit.
But in an Instagram post on Sunday (April 28), Scissor Sisters co-singer Ana Matronic called out Fallon and Rudd for their rendition of the track, specifically criticizing the duo for what she perceived as a public shaming of the appearance and attitude of Dead or Alive’s late frontman Pete Burns.
“I gotta read some beads right now, I’m pissed off,” the singer wrote on Instagram, captioning a photo of an article with the headline “Paul Rudd And Jimmy Fallon Give Us A Hilarious ‘You Spin Me Round’ Remake” from HuffPost. “I’ll tell you exactly why Jimmy Fallon and Paul Rudd’s remake of “You Spin Me Round” is NOT hilarious, and is NOT what we need right now … what’s the joke here – ‘OMG the 80s were so faggy’?”
The star also called out Rudd for being “homophobic” when he said in a later interview with Fallon that he was too embarrassed to meet Wu-Tang Clan because of the way he was dressed as Burns. “That man – that glorious, witty, glamorous, beautiful, talented and brave force of nature was a real human being, and that’s how he looked on and off stage, and he SUFFERED because of his uniqueness,” she wrote.
Matronic went on to call Rudd’s actions “tacky,” and said the video in and of itself was “punching down and reducing Pete to an object of ridicule.” Before ending her post, the star made one final remark defending Burns and dissing Rudd. “Pete’s Scouse ass could eat you for breakfast, Ant Boy,” she wrote.
A number of fans offered rebuttals to Matronic’s statement, with one commenter writing that the parody video would bring new eyes to the original, thus enshrining the legacy of Burns and Dead or Alive. But Matronic responded, “Paul & Jimmy told us that looks ridiculous, and is a source of shame for ‘normal’ people. I can’t with that shit.”
