RuPaul has been proving himself once again as an expert television host with the advent of his limited-run Fox talk show RuPaul. Chatting with celebrities like Adam Rippon, Paula Abdul, James Corden and more, Ru is showing the world he has what it takes to helm his very own daytime talk show.
RuPaul continued that trend when he sat down with superstar Adam Lambert on his show Monday. The conversation began with Lambert speaking about his upcoming album, Velvet, and how his new work is collaborative without feeling over-the-top. “It’s not a big superstar, name-ringing kind of situation,” he told Ru. “It’s friends, people that I’ve met over the last 10 years that I respect, a lot of queer writers as well that I’ve teamed up with, more female writers than ever.”
The star also chatted with the host about how his first single from the album, “New Eyes,” was inspired by his newfound love with his boyfriend Javi Costa Polo. “This guy makes me feel romantic, and I wanted to sing a pretty song about love,” he said, before revealing to Ru that the two met on Instagram. “We were texting for a while, and then we went on a proper date. And it was lovely, it was just a good vibe right from the jump, and it felt instant!”
The two also spoke about how instant success, especially as a queer celebrity more than a decade ago, can be terrifying. “There’s no handbook … being in the mainstream culture as a queer celebrity was a novelty [in 2009],” Lambert said, before asking Ru to offer any advice to any suddenly famous queer people today. “Breathe, laugh, repeat, take it one day at a time,” Ru said with a laugh.
