For Gay Pride Month, Billboard asked numerous pop culture luminaries to write ‘love letters’ to the LGBTQ community. Below, songwriter to the stars (Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, Britney Spears — to name a few) and GLAAD board member Justin Tranter shares theirs. Read more Pride Month love letters here.
My two favorite things in my life are the only two things I didn’t have to bust my ass to get. I was born into the most amazing family an underdog could be born into, and I was born into the LGBTQ community. And what a beautiful community we are. The art, the music, the fashion, the brains, the fight, the survival skills, the diversity, male, female, non-binary, Gender Non Conforming, cis, trans, femme and ALL races.
Our community is magic, especially when we are inclusive. Even though I identify as Gender Non Conforming, most of the world views me as a cis man, and I’m white as FUCK. So I have a lot of privilege compared to my trans brothers and sisters, and especially trans people of color. So I’d love to end this love letter to my LGBTQ family with a challenge. Do something for someone in our community who doesn’t have it as easy as you, and do it now. If we can’t stop body shaming, racism, misogyny, femmephobia and transphobia in our own community, how can ever expect it to happen in the rest of the world?
