Idina Menzel, Billy Porter, Ben Platt, Cynthia Erivo and more came together over the weekend for “Saturday Night Seder,” a virtual, star-studded Passover seder. About 50 celebrities participated in traditional storytelling, comedic skits and musical performances recalling maggid, the story of the Jews’ exodus from Egypt.
Hosted by Jason Alexander, “Saturday Night Seder” included Erivo and Shoshana Bean‘s rousing duet of “When You Believe” from Prince of Egypt accompanied by Stephen Schwartz; Porter and Henry Winkler’s singing/storytelling mashup of “Go Down Moses”; a musical recitation of the Four Questions by Nick Kroll, Finn Wolfhard, Menzel and The Ma Nishtanah Ensemble; and a hopeful “Next Year” ensemble led by Shaina Taub and featuring Whoopi Goldberg, Busy Philipps, Josh Groban, Tan France and more accompanied and co-written by Mark Sonnenblick.
The hourlong event raised approximately $2.35 million for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s COVID-19 Emergency Response Fund, and for those who missed it, you can still tune in on SaturdayNightSeder.com or BuzzFeed’s Tasty channel to donate.
“The COVID-19 pandemic is creating so many needs where we can all come together to support and bolster our health and public health systems that protect us all,” said Judy Monroe, MD, president and CEO of the CDC Foundation, in a press release. “I offer our profound thanks to the brilliant team that offered their time and talent for ‘Saturday Night Seder.’ Their combined efforts not only gave us all a respite from the concerns of the day but hope and vital support that will save and improve lives.”
