Panic! at the Disco frontman Brendon Urie starts his starring run as Charlie Price in the Broadway musical Kinky Boots next week and is taking us behind the scenes in a new promo video.
In the clip, Urie rolls up to the Al Hirschfeld Theatre in New York City, dressed in a leather biker jacket and other rocker gear. As he discusses his interest in the role, he is transformed into the square-looking Price, the musical’s star who inherits a shoe factory and forms an unlikely partnership with a crossdressing cabaret performer to produce high-heeled boots that save the business.
“What drew me to the show was when I saw it, I knew I wanted to be a part of it. It moved me so much, that end moment, the finale, I felt like I want to get up and shout and like celebrate life and that kind of feeling resonated within me and I wanted to be a part of it,” he says in the video. “The message is so clear, it’s so relatable. When audiences leave Kinky Boots, I hope they feel that passion that I felt that was like a fire inside of my chest.”
Kinky Boots is Urie’s Broadway debut. He will star in the production from May 26 to Aug. 6. He joins the show in its fourth year on Broadway. The winner of six Tony Awards, including Best Musical, the Jerry Mitchell-directed production features a score by Cyndi Lauper and a book by Harvey Fierstein.
