Mean Girls has been all the rage on Broadway since its April 8 opening at New York City’s August Wilson Theatre. And now with 12 Tony nominations to celebrate, the show has a new track out for all to hear: “Apex Predator,” the ultimate Regina George-heralding tune.
The cast performed the track live on the Today show Thursday morning (May 3), and as co-creator Tina Fey explained on the show, “Apex Predator” is the warning Janice (Barrett Wilbert Weed) gives the show’s protagonist Cady (Erika Henningsen) about the main mean girl of the school, Regina George.
“Don’t be fooled by the pink/ She is not playing dolls/ She is stalking the halls for the thrill of the kill,” Janice sings in the song’s opening. The accompanying scene sees Cady go to the mall with Regina and the other Plastics, Gretchen (Ashley Park) and Karen (Kate Rockwell), where Cady assesses her fate for hanging out with the queen mean girl and her tribe.
“So I’m kinda friends,” Cady later says about Regina in the song. In response, Janice makes sure to reinforce her caution: “But you’re kind of prey.”
“Apex Predator” follows Mean Girls‘ initial release, “I’d Rather Be Me,” both of which are part of the Mean Girls Original Broadway Cast Recording. The musical’s soundtrack will be available digitally on May 18, with physical copies arriving in stores on June 15. Fans can pre-order the album (which includes instant downloads of “Apex Predator” and “I’d Rather Be Me”) now here.
Mean Girls is up for best original score at this year’s Tony Awards, as well as 11 other awards, including best choreography, best direction of a musical and the coveted best musical award. The Tonys will broadcast live on June 10 at 8 p.m. ET on CBS.
