The powerful video for “Immigrants (We Get The Job Done)” off the Hamilton Mixtape was released Wednesday morning (June 28). The album, inspired by the Tony Award-winning musical Hamilton: An American Musical, consists of covers from the show as well as songs inspired by the production. The mixtape debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart.
“Immigrants (We Get The Job Done)” features K’naan, Snow Tha Product, Riz MC and Residente and tackles the subject in America head on. The opening scene of the visual sets the tone for the rest of it, with radio news reporter stating, “It’s really astounding that in a country founded by immigrants, immigrant has become a bad word.”
As the song’s stars continue to sing the powerful words of the track, the video emphasizes those lyrics with intense visuals of police raids and blue-collar workers of all demographics coming together to sing the song. Dark scenes of dimly lit subway cars and underground tunnels demonstrate the struggle, heart and contributions of “America’s ghost writers.”
The man behind the Hamilton phenomenon, Lin Manuel Miranda, served as executive producer of the video and was first to share it on social media Wednesday. The visual is directed by Tomas Whitmore.
