Broadway fans usually most look forward to seeing their favorite actors in the kind of roles they seem born to play — and once a year, those roles aren’t the ones traditionally written for them. MCC Theater’s Miscast gala is a high point of the spring theater season, at which musical theater stars (and stars who just love musical theater) give bravura performances of songs written for the gender opposite to their own.
This year’s Miscast on April 1 offered another night of swoon-worthy star turns, from Karen Olivo’s roof-rattling rendition of “Your Eyes” (sung by Roger in Rent) to Jennifer Nettles’ soulful take on “It All Fades Away” (sung by Robert in The Bridges of Madison County). The men represented as well, including Hamilton and In the Heights alum Chistopher Jackson — best known of late for his portrayal of George Washington, but proving in the below clip (a Billboard exclusive) that he’d make a fine Deena Jones in Dreamgirls, performing “Listen,” the Oscar-nominated song from the film version of the musical, originally peformed by Beyoncé.
