Gwen Stefani spread some holiday cheer at The Late Late Show with a performance of “You Make It Feel Like Christmas” off her album of the same name on Tuesday night (Dec. 18). The singer also talked music she’s made with Pharrell Williams, her appreciation for elves and her kids’ recognition of their mom’s celebrity status.
Wearing a long formal dress, the 49-year-old performed in front of red lights and a collection of Christmas trees. Trumpets, epic harmonies and jingle bells joined the action, lending Stefani’s holiday original a classic, cheery big-band feel.
Stefani and Williams additionally sat down on the couch to chat about their collaborations.
“It was like a cultural collision,” said Stefani of their early work together. “At first we were coming from such different worlds, but yet we were so similar in so many ways. We had the same interests, the same love for life and art and music and for telling a story and getting our feelings out.”
She added that while Williams had reservations about some of her early musical decisions — specifically when she wanted to put yodeling in the ’06 track “Wind It Up” — he eventually came around.
Stefani also discussed her new “Cheers For The Elves” song, adding that her family participates in the Elf on the Shelf tradition (moving elves to new positions in the house to watch over the kids). She also said that once in a while, her children seem to recognize and make use of her fame.
“I feel like in the right circumstance, they’ll be like, ‘Mom, mom, can you just like text, like, Ellen and see if she can text Ninja to see if he wants to play Fortnite with me tonight because I know you have her text?’” she said, adding that the answer to that question was “no.”
