The former Glee star hosted his 4th annual Elsie Fest at Central Park SummerStage in New York City, celebrating Broadway shows old and new with appearances from Sutton Foster, Alex Newell and Rufus Wainwright. During one of Criss’ solo performances on the stage, the newly Emmy-winning actor paid homage to his first Broadway role in How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying. He stripped down the show’s big dance number, “Brotherhood of Man,” using his acoustic guitar to make everyone swoon — and then took that to another level.
“Now there’s a second verse in here,” Criss told the crowd. “I wasn’t the only person to do this show, so I’m gonna need help from another person who did this show.”
Out came Nick Jonas, and cue the hysteria. The two took turns with the remaining verses of the song, occasionally harmonizing as fans excitedly cheered them on.
Criss and Jonas each played the lead role of J. Pierrepont Finch in How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying in 2012, taking over for Daniel Radcliffe who played Finch in the initial reprisal of the musical in 2011. The show marked Criss’ Broadway debut and Jonas’ fourth, but first since 1999.
Jonas wasn’t the only surprise guest at this year’s Elsie Fest, as the show also featured appearances from Jodi Benson (aka the original voice of Ariel), Zachary Levi and Casey Cott.
