You know Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen, Comet and Cupid and Donner and Blitzen. But did you know that the most famous reindeer of all are sharing Christmas singles on Spotify?
Recorded at various studios around the world, Demi Lovato, Sam Smith, Fifth Harmony and Kelly Clarkson have all released holiday singles special to the streaming service’s new exclusive playlist, “Spotify Singles – Holiday.”
Lovato recorded a cover of Christmas classic “I’ll Be Home For Christmas” at Spotify Studios NYC. The song starts lackadaisically with Lovato lightly sprinkled over piano before launching into her signature booming voice.
Sam Smith offered up “River,” originally by Joni Mitchell in 1971. Smith recorded “River” at RAK Studios in London. It should come as no surprise that Smith’s contribution to this holiday playlist is a sad one (“I wish I had a river I could skate away on”) — his specialty. The way Smith sings “River,” and without prior knowledge that it’s a Mitchell song, you could easily be fooled into believing it is a track on his newly released album, The Thrill Of It All.
Kelly Clarkson’s original song “Christmas Eve,” which debuted in October, is also lumped into the playlist. According to Billboard at the time, “Christmas Eve” is the sequel to Clarkson’s 2016 holiday children’s book titled River Rose and the Magical Lullaby. We haven’t heard Clarkson’s voice wrapped in tinsel since her 2013 Christmas album Wrapped In Red.
And finally, Fifth Harmony also added an original song with “Can You See,” which originally is part of new Christmas movie The Star (out Nov. 17). “Can You See” is an R&B-tinged tune, hopeful about the holiday spirit, and equally highlighted each of the four Harmonizers.
Other singles added to the “Spotify Singles – Holiday” playlist came from Jack Johnson with “In The Morning,” Miley Cyrus (“Sleigh Ride” and “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree” from Spotify Studios NYC) and Josh Groban, who released a full Christmas album (Noel) in 2007, with “Happy Xmas (War Is Over).”
