With Thanksgiving less than a week away, the holiday season is officially in full swing, and on Friday (Nov. 22), a host of artists gifted fans another round of festive music to soundtrack their holiday traditions.
From Little Mix and Mabel to Cam, Kelly Rowland and an entire album of Hanukkah tunes, check out Billboard‘s latest rundown of this week’s holiday offerings below (and view our best-of-the-season roundup here).
Little Mix, “One I’m Missing”
On their first-ever Christmas track, veteran UK girl group Little Mix takes a stab at an original song, perfectly capturing the warm fuzzies of being curled up by the fireplace with the one you love after coming home for the holidays. “Cause I’ve been gone so long/ But I kept holding on/ Cause I need to show you just how much I love you this Christmas,” Leigh Anne Pinnock declares on the track’s chorus as the other girls deliver doo-wop harmonies straight out of the 1960s.
Mabel, “Loneliest Time Of Year”
U.K. pop star Mabel follows up her debut album, High Expectations, with an apology for her holiday blues. “Sorry I’m not so merry/ But I feel like this yearly/ Christmastime isn’t my vibe/ Brings no joy into my life,” she laments over finger snaps and mournful guitar, tapping into the universal dichotomy of feeling festive when so much continues to go wrong in the world. As Mabel points out on the song’s soaring bridge, she can’t be the only one feeling like this, right?
Cam, “I’ll Be Home For Christmas”
Country star Cam takes a more traditional route with her cover of perennial holiday classic “I’ll Be Home For Christmas.” Considering the Nashville-based artist is due to give birth to her first child with husband Adam Weaver any day now, the song’s wistful lyrics certainly take on a new meaning for the mom-to-be.
Kelly Rowland, “Love You More At Christmas Time”
Kelly Rowland imbues her new Christmas single “Love You More At Christmas Time” with the spirit of Destiny Child’s classic 8 Days of Christmas, swooningly delivering lines like “Baby I believe in dreams/ And the joy the season brings/ You and me” with a wide-eyed sweeteness perfect for the soundtrack of upcoming Lifetime holiday movie, Merry Liddle Christmas. If only there was a shout-out to Chloe shades, diamond belly rings and “quality T-I-M-E” somewhere in the lyrics…
Various Artists, Hanukkah+
Haim, The Flaming Lips, Jack Black and more contribute to this compilation of Hanukkah music inspired by Yo La Tengo‘s annual run of eight shows centered around Hanukkah, with Adam Green even breaking down the history of Judah and the Maccabees on “Dreidels Of Fire.” Filled with tracks by both Jewish and non-Jewish artists, Hanukkah+ is a unique addition to the slew of Christmas music that dominates the airwaves that will have you dancing the hora in no time.
Sting & Shaggy, “Silent Night (Christmas Is Coming)”
Sting and Shaggy continue their ongoing creative partnership — which culminated with their Grammy-winning collaborative album 44/876 — with a reggae-infused take on “Silent Night,” mashing the traditional hymn’s sacred lyrics with the dancehall inflections of original track “Christmas Is Coming.” The pair are set to debut the track live on Nov. 28 with a performance during ABC’s Wonderful World of Disney: Magical Holiday Celebration.
Christina Perri, A Very Merri Perri Christmas (Extra Presents)
Christina Perri adds to her 2012 holiday EP, A Very Merri Perri Christmas, with a special reissue filled with a couple “extra presents.” Included among the singer-songwriter’s original song “Something About December” and pitch-perfect take on “Merry Christmas Darling” are a cover of “I’ll Be Home For Christmas” and an acoustic rendition of “Let It Snow.”
The Band Perry, “The First Noel”
For their holiday tune, The Band Perry tackle “The First Noel,” turning the standard into a gorgeous harmonic duet driven by syncopated guitar, percussion and strings. Available as an exclusive on Amazon Music, the track joins pianist Chloe Flower‘s “Carol of the Bells” and Nina Nesbitt‘s “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” as the streaming platform’s unique, festive offerings for the 2019 season.
