Nick Jonas threw everyone for a loop when he released not one, but two, R&B-influenced tracks off his forthcoming solo record.
At the 2014 iHeartRadio Music Festival, the 22-year-old admits he’s excited people were not expecting the musical journey he’s going on. “It’s nice to surprise people,” he said of the reaction to “Chains” and “Jealous.”
Both tracks will be featured on his self-titled solo album, out on Nov. 11.

“I think the biggest surprise would probably be in the, just the transparency in the music, finding the most honest way to say something instead of the best way,” he said. “I think it’s been a really important thing for me to tell these stories as honestly as I can and have fun in the process. I’m generally living what I’m doing and I’m loving this music I’m releasing.”

The solo venture comes one year after Nick and his brothers, Joe and Kevin, decided to disband the Jonas Brothers after nearly a decade together. “I definitely feel like I’m more sound now than I was last year… just in a place where I sort of know what it is I want to accomplish and really trying to take those steps to continue to grow and build this fanbase with this new sound and this new direction,” he said. “And just be really real with myself and what my goals are and having a lot of fun in the process.”
