The Record Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ) released figures for the overall music market production in Japan in 2008 showing a decrease for audio units (including CD, record and cassettes), while music video production was up.

The total production of audio units for 2008 was 247.75 million, down 7% on the production rate for 2007. Production in terms of total value for 2008 was 296.1 billion yen ($3.3 billion dollars), which represents only 89% of the value in 2007 (in a yen-based comparison).

Music video production in 2008 was up compared to the previous year, however. Overall, 55.74 million music video units were produced in 2008 - an increase of 8% compared to 2007. Production in terms of total value for 2008 was 65.6 billion yen ($730.6 million), a 13% value increase on 2007 (in a yen-based comparison)
