Jhené Aiko has signed with BMI for representation of the public performances of her music. The newcomer is generating chart buzz with her current single, “The Worst.”
Produced by Fisticuffs, the song hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop chart this year, making Aiko the first female artist to top the chart as a lead with a debut single since 2008.
The singer/songwriter is due to release "Souled Out," her full-length album debut, in late summer through Artium/Def Jam. The set’s producers include No I.D. and Fisticuffs. Aiko has also garnered three nominations for the 2014 BET Awards (June 29): best female R&B/pop artist, the Centric Award and the Coca-Cola Viewers’ Choice Award.
In a statement announcing the signing, BMI VP, writer/publisher relations Catherine Brewton said, “Jhené Aiko has brought a new and fresh sound to music. Her smooth voice and compelling lyrics are the perfect combination to fill a void in popular music.”
