Kobalt Signs Global Admin Deal For Frank Zappa’s Catalog

Kobalt Music Group has forged a worldwide deal to administer the catalog of the late alternative rock legend Frank Zappa.

With immediate effect, Kobalt begins global representation of all Zappa’s songs, including his early works with the Mothers of Invention, his touring groups, and his solo pieces.

Kobalt will also represent the catalog for synchronization in film, TV, games and other media and, naturally, will now handle all global copyright administration services.

“We are extremely honored to represent the extensive, illustrious repertoire of the legendary Frank Zappa who is certainly one of the greatest musical geniuses of the last century,” comments Richard Sanders, president of Kobalt, in a statement issued today. “It’s our privilege to be working with The Zappa Family Trust to protect and promote his iconic catalog.”

Zappa passed away in 1993, having elevated rock music to another level through his cross-pollinations of jazz, rock, pop, doo-wop, and artistic absurdity.

His legacy includes classic works such as "Freak Out," which Zappa recorded with the Mothers of Invention, and the "Masterwork" trilogy comprised of "Lumpy Gravy," "We're Only In It for the Money" and "Civilization."

With a primary catalog spanning 65 albums, the Zappa Family Trust will release the 100th official Frank Zappa album within a year.

“Frank Zappa wielded a big stick, whether baton or guitar, and his influence on music and the arts in contemporary society penetrated and plumbed the depths of the importance of a free society with a sense of humor,” comments Gail Zappa, Frank’s widow and trustee of the Zappa Family Trust. “We are forever laughing at the absurdity of this business and we are pleased to be doing it in the company of Kobalt.”
