Harris Publications, home of dozens of enthusiast-focused magazine titles including Celebrity Hairstyles, Dog News and Fresh Quilts, has announced to employees that it is shutting down immediately. Founded in 1977, the New York-based company cited the "rapid ascendance of digital media, changing consumer content preferences, magazine wholesaler struggles and consolidation in the supply chain" for the decision, according to a statement acquired by Folio.
Based on the company’s website, more than 75 magazine and websites will be affected by the closure. Its current portfolio is geared towards hobbyists whose interests include guns (Combat Handguns, Ballistic), cars (Rides, Mopar Action) and home/garden (Paint It, Great Backyards). It also publishes lifestyle title Juicy and special editions focused on topics ranging from survivalism to baseball, as well as the annual Harris’ Farmer’s Almanac (not to be confused with Yankee Publishing's Old Farmer's Almanac).
Harris is also the former home of several current newsstand favorites including XXL, Guitar World, Revolver and SLAM. The news arrives a month after Harris re-hired its longtime publisher Jonathan Rheingold as Chief Revenue Officer.
