Victoria Espinel, U.S. 'IP Czar,' to Keynote World Copyright Summit

A2IM's Indie Week kicks off its seventh year June 19, and before the organization's inaugural Libera Awards honor the top independent labels and musicians, U.S. Intellectual Property Enforcement Coordinator Victoria Espinel will give the conference's keynote speech on June 21.

A2IM To Produce First Ever Independent Music Awards

The IPEC position was created by the Obama Administration in 2009 to protect the economic interests of small businesses creating intellectual property, music, and art, with Espinel the position's first ever appointee. Throughout her time as coordinator, the U.S. 'I.P. Czar' has advocated for harsher punishments, including jail time, for intellectual property crimes, as well as elevating illegal streaming to a felony "in appropriate circumstances." Her appointment was applauded by many copyright and publishing organizations at the time.

The conference will also feature a discussion with a delegation from the China Audio-Video Association titled "Exporting to the Emerging Music Market in China," which is set to relate methods for accessing the market in the country of 1.3 billion people.
