Canadian Federal Court Judge Konrad von Finckenstein has been named chairman of Canada's broadcast regulator, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission in Ottawa.

"Mr. von Finckenstein's credentials will bring strong leadership to the CRTC," said Canadian Heritage Minister Bev Oda in a Jan. 25 statement. "I am confident that his experience will greatly benefit the commission."

Von Finckenstein immediately replaces Charles Dalfen, whose 5-year term as CRTC chair ended in December.

From 1997 to 2003, German-born von Finckenstein headed the Canadian Competition Bureau. In 2003, he was appointed a federal court judge.

Von Finckenstein's appointment comes at a busy time the federal agency. It is in the midst of dealing with two recent major media consolidation cases: Bell Globemedia's buy-out of CHUM Ltd. and the acquisition of Alliance Atlantis by CanWest Global Communications and New York-based Goldman Sachs Capital.
