Silverchair's first single in four years, "Straight Lines," bowed at No. 1 on this week's Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Top 100 this week, published yesterday. The track also tops the ARIA digital chart for its fourth week.

Silverchair is signed to their manager John Watson's Eleven The Music label, and distributed by Virgin/EMI Music in Australia, New Zealand and Southeast Asia.

It is the band's third chart-topping single. Its breakthrough single "Tomorrow," from October 1994, held the top spot for six weeks. "Freak" from 1997 took pole position for two weeks. Both were on Sony Music, as it was known then. The alternative rock trio then took a three-year hiatus from 2003.

The chart effort "makes them the first Aussie act since The Easybeats and The Seekers in the 1960s to have three No. 1 singles," reports Aussie chart historian Gavin Ryan.

Watson says the band's Web site handled much of the single's early marketing. Buzz was also generated through a promotion where unedited performance footage was posted on MySpace, which allowed fans to create their own videos for the songs. That initiative attracted 800,000 views in month, Watson says.

Releasing the track digitally three weeks before the physical version also helped build interest; The track debuted at No. 1 on the ARIA digital chart and stayed there for four weeks. "That reinforced radio and retail confidence in the song," Watson says, noting that the single has achieved greater radio and video support than any of the band's previous tracks.

The band's album "Young Modern" is released locally March 31. The trio also this week announced details of its first indoor concerts in Australia for nearly four years, beginning April 27 at the Tivoli in Brisbane.

Silverchair is currently unsigned for Europe and North America. It was with Atlantic for those territories when it released its ambitious 2002 "Diorama" album. But an illness that prevented guitarist and singer Daniel Johns from performing axed all touring plans.

Watson says current negotiations should see "Young Modern" released internationally in July.

The band will base itself in the northern hemisphere from mid-May, do pre-release showcases in June and play major U.S. and European festivals through August.
