A group of British live-music entrepreneurs are launching the INDY Music Awards, said to be the first awards gala devoted to London's independent music venues, promoters and acts.

The first ceremony is scheduled to take place May 15 at London's 1,400-capacity Clapham Grand.

The INDY Awards categories are for the best independent venue, fan of the year, the people's choice award, plus artists within up to six music-genre categories.

The organizers, from London-based Independent Music Corporation, will ask the operators of 60 London independent venues and promoters to select the nominees. Each venue can select four acts, while each promoter can select four acts per every venue he or she promotes.

A panel of the as-yet unidentified live-music industry figures will then select from the shortlist the Best Independent Venue.

The fan of the year will be chosen by artists and their promoters, who must explain in 150 words only why their most devoted supporters need to be considered.

The artist that collects the most votes by gig-goers via the indyawards.co.uk Web site will be rewarded with the people's choice gong.

Voting kicks off on April 2, with the shortlist unveiled on April 18 at London's Rock Garden venue.
