The Official U.K. Charts Company (OCC) has appointed Martin Talbot to the newly-created role of managing director.

Talbot, who has edited Music Week for five years, will join the company on Oct. 1. The OCC says his appointment is part of a drive to develop its service for "an entertainment business increasingly active in digital distribution".

"The first-class retail data collection and analysis it [the OCC] performs is a vital service for companies operating in such a fast-paced and rapidly changing business environment," OCC chairman David Joseph said in a statement.

"The company is looking to build on that expertise and develop new strategies to drive an ambitious programme of growth," adds Joseph. Martin's unparalleled industry knowledge combined with the commercial experience he has gained at Music Week made him the outstanding candidate for this crucial new role."

Talbot said, "The OCC already provides the world's most detailed and accurate music sales information through physical and myriad digital platforms, a vital industry service that has enormous potential for further development."

Talbot will also aim to expand upon the services the company offers to the video industry, where digital distribution is increasingly important.

Coinciding with his appointment, the OCC said that video industry association BVA will have a representative voice, Steve Gallant, within the company for the first time. ITV DVD's publishing director Gallant joins the OCC board in a non-executive capacity.

The OCC is a joint-venture between the U.K. recorded music association the BPI and Entertainment Retailers Association (ERA). It collects, analyses and markets sales information on the UK's music and video industries.
