Rocker Matt Mays and El Torpedo and singer/songwriter Gordie Sampson lead Canada’s East Coast Music Awards nominations with five each.

Other nominated acts include Newfoundland alt-rock band Hey Rosetta! and singer Jill Barber, who each received four nominations. Three other acts also received four nominations, while 16 artists received two nominations.

The awards show takes place in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, as part of a festival and conference that runs from Feb. 26 to March 1.

“The 2009 East Coast Music Award nominees truly reflect the vibrant musical diversity among East Coast artists, from well-established and popular bands and musicians to fresh new faces and sounds,” said Wade Pinhorn, chair of the East Coast Music Association.

Award nominees are chosen by juries of industry professionals from Atlantic Canada. All eligible members of the East Coast Music Association vote for the winners.
