The industry association Music City Hamburg will award the inaugural Hans - the Hamburg Music Prize on Sept. 24.

With this new award, musicians who live in Hamburg will be honored in the category artist of the year, while there are additional award categories for the team that most successfully broke an artist and the media organization that best promoted the Hamburg music scene.

Sixteen executives from the record industry, music publishers and concert promoters are on the jury. The title of the award "Hans" stands for the Hamburg born singer and actor Hans Albers who died in 1960. The award will be presented annually. Among the sponsors are Warner Music, Edel, EMI Music Publishing, the city of Hamburg, the radio station NDR and VUT and the association of independent producers.

"With this award we want to strengthen the town Hamburg and the identification of the creatives with the city," said Uritz von Oertzen, chairman of IHM (Interest group of the Hamburg music-industry).

Bernd Hocke, general manager of Edel AG, added: "Hamburg's international reputation as a music place with legends from the Beatles [who based themselves in Hamburg with residencies in the early part of their career] to Bert Kaempfert and Tocotronic is asking for an award for the music scene of such a variety. Edel AG is happy to join in contributing into this award. A lot of Edel successes on the international music market had their start in Hamburg."
