The Glade Festival has become the first victim of the U.K. summer festivals, with organizers blaming its cancellation on the increased requirements for policing, security and stewarding.

The 15,000-capacity event was scheduled to feature Orbital, Simian Mobile Disco, Tricky and Delphic, among others, at the Matterly Bowl, Winchester on July 15-18.

The independent festival launched in 2004 and there is no word on whether they plan to return in 2011.

In a statement, organizers said the council had been helpful for their move to the new site, but said that police demands had imposed added costs over the years and the.

"To make matters worse the reluctance of the police to negotiate in advance and deliberately delay any dialogue with us has resulted in our being unable to tie down a final costing for the event," said the statement. "This, along with unexpected legal fees associated with a last minute license review, has radically increased the cost of the festival.

Organizers also admitted that advance ticket sales were "below our expectations." Refunds will be offered at point of purchase and there also plans to allow tickets to be swapped for another festival at a discounted rate.
