Ping, Apple's beleaguered attempt at adding a social layer to iTunes, still has no integration with Facebook. And all signs point to no solution to that problem emerging anytime soon.

The plan of course was for Ping and Facebook to work together, which we learned shortly after the Ping reveal.

Silicon Alley Insider, however, has more details on what happened. Apparently Apple and Facebook were in talks for more than 18 months on developing a joint social layer to iTunes.

Besides just being some juicy bit of gossip, there's a larger lesson here. If Facebook's influence and power has grown to the point that it can afford to give Jobs & Co. the hand, imagine how little traction the music industry can get trying to force their terms of a music service on the world's most popular social network.
