Mario Pacheco, a legend of the Spanish indie music scene, has died at his Madrid home after a long illness. He was 60.

In 1982, Pacheco founded one of the first authentic indie labels in Spain, Nuevos Medios.

Pacheco, who was also a producer and photographer of many Spanish artists' album covers, was an early believer in flamenco-pop fusion. One of his first discoveries was flamenco-pop gypsy band Ketama.

He was a founder and president of the Spanish indie labels association, UFI. His health began to deteriorate not long after the sudden death of his wife in the late '90s.
