Google has released a "smarter" and "much more assistive" version of its Google Play Music streaming service. The new GPM leans heavily on machine learning to get a read on your musical likes, and then "mixes in signals like location, activity, and the weather" along with hand-curated playlists.
Contextual tools that power and individualize other Google products are being utilized to help provide "richer" recommendations. "When you opt in, we’ll deliver personalized music based on where you are and why you are listening," said lead product manager Elias Roman on the Google blog.
The new Google Play Music also creates offline playlists for you, based on your listening history, meaning there will always be tracks on your phone even if you lose cell service.
A new home screen reflects on your listening habits as well, so if you’re someone who hits the gym most mornings, a workout playlist may appear. Ditto for users who religiously visit the app on Fridays for new music or who rock out on drives home from work.
