Latin Recording Academy Honoring Oscar D’Leon, ‘Don Francisco' and Others

Oscar D’Leon

The Latin Recording Academy is honoring several artists for their lifetime achievements including Venezuelan singer/songwriter Oscar D'Leon, Cuban musician Juan Formell and bossa nova composer Roberto Menescal during a November ceremony during Latin Grammy week in Las Vegas.

Also being recognized for their achievements are Colombian songstress Totó La Momposina, Argentine crooner Palito Ortega, bandleader/musician Eddie Palmieri and Spanish-born composer Miguel Rios.

The Academy this year will also present Trustees Awards to veteran TV personality Mario Kreutzberger known to millions of television viewers as "Don Francisco.” The same honor will also go to Mexican-born musician, composer and musical director Pedro Ramírez Valásquez, who in the late '40s joined his father's musical troupe as a second trumpeter, which was unprecedented for mariachi bands of that time.

"It is with great pride that we announce this year's honorees, who not only epitomize the essence of true masters of their craft and genre, but represent the global musical spectrum that encompasses the Latin community at large," said Gabriel Abaroa Jr., President/CEO of The Latin Recording Academy. "We continue to be humbled by their contributions to the musical legacy of the Latin world, and celebrate and honor their accomplishments and the talent that they have graciously shared with us over the decades."

The Trustees Award is a special prize that trustees present to those who have made "significant contributions, other than performance, to the field of recording during their careers." The Lifetime Achievement award is presented to performers who have made "creative contributions of outstanding artistic significance to the field of recording during their careers."

The awards will be presented at an invitation-only ceremony at the Four Seasons Las Vegas on Nov. 20, a day prior to the Latin Grammys telecast as part of the week-long 14th Annual Latin Grammy Awards celebration.
