The DVD Copy Control Assn. (DVD CCA) has dropped its lawsuit against California resident Andrew Bunner, who it claimed illegally posted a DVD decryption program online.

The Morgan Hill, Calif.-based DVD CCA says the decision to drop the case is "the first step in [our] evolved strategy, which is being updated to reflect current factors in the rapidly changing marketplace. DVD CCA is also considering taking action to enforce patents on its technology in order to protect its CSS copy protection system from unauthorized use."

The California Supreme Court in August 2003 barred Bunner from posting the decryption program. The case was awaiting further proceedings in the California Court of Appeal, where it was expected that Bunner would claim that his right to post the program was protected by the First Amendment.
